Neurological physiotherapy is the treatment of patients who have a neurological disorder arising from damage to the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves including Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Cerebral Palsy (CP). Symptoms of these conditions may consist of movement disorders, altered sensation, speech and swallowing problem.
In essence, the treatment of neurological disorders aims to influence “neuroplastic” change in the central nervous system by targeting pathways to promote the recovery of normal movement patterns. The term “neuroplasticity” is used to describe the brain’s ability to “remap” through a process of reorganisation by forming new neural pathways.
Physiotherapy treatment for neurological conditions is a dynamic, collaborative process which is goal orientated and specifically tailored to a patient’s needs to enhance quality of life and promote physical functioning and independence. Specific treatment techniques may include joint mobilisations; soft tissue mobilisations; stretching; strengthening; balance and proprioceptive education; postural exercises and gait (walking) re-education. Neuro Care and Clinical Modified Pilates are also valuable in the treatment of neurological disorders.
